On 13 October 2020, the Bali Process Government and Business Forum (GABF) convened a virtual Consultation and Innovation Session focused on tackling labour exploitation in the fishing sector. The session brought together government representatives, industry leaders, and civil society organisations to share experiences, identify challenges, and explore innovative solutions to strengthen protections for workers in one of the world’s most vulnerable industries.
Discussions highlighted the complex nature of exploitation in the fishing sector, including risks linked to recruitment practices, working conditions at sea, and limited oversight across supply chains. Participants explored practical strategies to improve transparency, enhance due diligence, and strengthen collaboration between governments and businesses to safeguard workers’ rights.
Outcomes from the session have contributed to ongoing Bali Process work on addressing exploitation in supply chains and continue to inform future initiatives aimed at building safer, fairer, and more sustainable practices in the global fishing industry.
